Catwalk Trio Concert

As a member of the Violet Composers' Collective, Hyojin Kwak is participating in the Catwalk Trio concert.

Her piece Ullim(울림) for percussion trio will receive its premiere.
Ullim can be translated into English as “resonance”. In this piece, it means more than just sound. It is what happens when performers and audience breathe together, follow each other’s movements, and connect through sound.

Three percussionists with contrasting instruments create a world of rhythm that fills the room and gently stirs the listener’s senses.

This piece is inspired by Samulnori, a Korean percussion music genre. It borrows the character of the four core instruments and the structure of Jangdan (Korean rhythmic patterns), reimagined with new textures.

As the rhythm builds and moments of stillness and intensity shift back and forth, the music moves through the space like ripples, bringing up feelings that feel both new and strangely familiar.

This collaborative performance between Catwalk Trio and the Violet Composers' Collective features world premieres of new works by six composers, each offering a unique perspective on contemporary percussion music. These pieces will be performed by Catwalk Trio, a renowned percussion ensemble based in New York.

The concert is presented by NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions (Marilyn Nonken, Chair) and NYU Percussion Studies (Jonathan Haas, Director).
